I get to meet some really interesting people through my work, and Charlie Martell is definitely one of those people. He's getting ready for a fund raising rowing challenge which if completed will see him claiming his third Guinness World Record.

I was booked to take some press shots of Charlie by the ever so lovely Romaine over at Devotion PR, below is the press release about what Charlie is doing and why, I think it definitely deserves a read.

Usually with shooting press shots like this I miss all of the publications, but Devotion PR are always on the ball, and I've found this little feature in my inbox, so what better way to start the year than with a nice printed publication, with a 3 page feature and photos scattered throughout the magazine.

Challenges the Everestof the Oceans

In May 2012 double Guinness World Recordholder and Army Commando, Charlie Martell will row solo and unsupported for6,000 miles across the North Pacific from Japan to the USA to raise funds forhis chosen charities & set a new Guinness World Record for the first andfastest solo Briton.

The route, known as the Everest of The Oceans, could takeCharlie more than six months to complete, but to take the world record he willhave to do it in just four months whilst battling through the typhoon season,the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’ – a belt of seismic and volcanic activity - anddodging migrating whales. The PacificOcean is the largest and deepest ocean basins in the world and once out in themiddle, Charlie is days from being rescued.

Only one (French) ocean-rower has ever successfullycompleted an unsupported row on this treacherous west-to-east crossing andMartell intends to become the first Briton to make the crossing alone andunsupported (he carries all his food and provisions on board with no support back-upboat).

Charlie will be raising money for Give Them a SportingChance, which enables disabled people to fulfil their sporting ambitions, andToe in the Water, which provides competitive sailing for injured servicepersonnel

The objectives of the challenge are:

1. To set a new crossing record, the current solo record is134 days

2. To become the first Briton to complete this route aloneand unsupported

3. To raise funds for, and awareness of, two charities - "Toe in The Water" - www.toeinthewater.org and "Give Them a Sporting Chance"- www.givethemasportingchance.com

Charlie Martell is a Mine Action Specialist who started hiscareer serving with the British Army in Iraq and also in Northern Ireland andBosnia. He has since gone on to work for the United Nations and The HALO Trustspecialising in mine clearance and post-conflict recovery in war-torncountries.

Martell first launched the idea for Pacific 2012 after aninspiring meeting with the charity Give Them A Sporting Chance which enablesthose with disabilities - of all ages - to complete their sporting ambitions. Martell is also a core crew member of anothercharity, Toe in the Water - who offer competitive sailing for servicemen andwomen who have often suffered traumatic injuries. Bringing these two charitiestogether has been Martell's mission in the last year and he has been thepowerhouse behind the Pacific 2012 challenge which aims to raise much neededfunds for both organisations.

Charlie Martell is the son of Gloucestershire farmer and well-knowncheese-maker, Charles Martell who’s creation, Stinking Bishop cheese, isequally loved and loathed the world over for its pungent smell and delicatetaste. Having sailed as a child and withfamily links to the Royal Navy stretching back generations, Martell is at homeon the water. Swapping his sails for oars, this challenge will be the ultimatetest in mental strength and endurance. All the qualities that he possesses andwill put in to practice for the epic journey that lies ahead of him.

Mess around with Anita De Bauch

I was recently lucky enough to get booked by a client to shoot some catalogue photos for their website with a long time friend Anita De Bauch. After we had done the stock/catalogue photos for their site, Jules the client was happy enough for us to use some of their products for a quick mess around shoot. Jules makes handmade leather goods, including the harnesses seen in the shots below.

Here's what we can up with in a speedy 10min shoot.

Later on we also did some funky bright images, again completely unplanned and off the cuff shooting. I threw Anita into the jacket and glasses and told her to roll with it. Sometimes it's so nice to be able to just shoot candid images with friends, as there isn't the demands to succeed in getting X Y and Z.

What's your everyday camera?

As photographers, we're probably aware what's around us most of the time. We look at details, shapes and light, and we often document these things with our everyday cameras; be it a phone, compact digital, a film camera or whatever else we have to hand.

I always have my phone in my pocket so should I need to take a photo I can do so, but I'm often left waiting for the camera to open, and missing the moment due to the phone not being quick enough. This has left me longing for something to bridge the gap between my phone and DSLR's, and after reading numerous blogs I still can't decide what I want.

I recently saw Jay McLaughlin's blog about his Olympus E-PL1 camera and I've seen other photographers blogs about their Canon Powershot G-12 or their Sony Nex-7, or equivalents.

I guess what I'm looking for from those that use them, what made you make your final choice? What requirements did you have, and has it fullfilled those requirements since you got it? Is there anything you wanted it to do that it doesn't and you now know one that fills that requirement? Would you change to that one?

I'd be looking for something that's rather small and light, easy to use menus etc, that has the capability work work in varying scenarios i.e. harsh sunlight and low light etc so I think the Canon Powershot G-12 (or any other from that range) would be suited to what I want.

It's that time of year again where today (1st of Movember) we have a clean shave, then grow whatever Mo (Moustache) we want. The aim of which is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men.

On Movember 1st, guys register at Movember.com with a clean-shaven face and then for the rest of the month, these selfless and generous men, known as Mo Bros, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Movember Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo-growing efforts.

Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November and through their actions and words raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.

At the end of the month, Mo Bros and Mo Sistas celebrate their gallantry and valor by either throwing their own Movember party or attending one of the infamous Gala Partés held around the world by Movember, for Movember.

Men's Health

The average life expectancy for men is four years less than women (presently 78 years old compared to 82).

The rate of cancer diagnoses in men is considerably higher than the rate in women. In every 100,000 men there will be 417 cases diagnosed, compared to 366 cases per 100,000 females.

Evidence suggests that about a third (39%) of 12 common cancers in the UK could be prevented through diet, physical activity and body weight.

1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.

In 2008 37,051 new cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed and 10,168 men died.

Testicular cancer in the UK affects younger men between the ages of 20 and 50. 1,990 men were diagnosed with the disease in 2007.

Smoking accounts for at least 25% of all cancer deaths and 86% of lung cancer deaths.

In 2008 22,846 men were diagnosed with lung cancer and 19,868 men died from the disease.

While not as common, men can get breast cancer. In 2008 about 341 new cases of invasive breast cancer were diagnosed among men and about 69 men died from the disease.

The most common cancer in the UK for men is prostate cancer and for women breast cancer.

In 2008 5,584 men were diagnosed with skin cancer (malignant melanoma) and 1,121 men died from the disease.

An estimated 2.8million people have diabetes and 850,000 do not know it.

About 1 in 3 adults have high blood pressure, and blood pressure tends to rise with age.

1 in 4 men in the UK will experience a mental health problem at some point in their lives.

Men commit suicide four times as often as women.

Only 26% of men go to their GPs for regular check ups.

Let’s face it, men are known to be more indifferent towards their health, especially when compared to the efforts of women, who proactively and publicly address their health issues in a way not traditionally seen with men. As a result, today the levels of awareness, understanding and funding for support of male health issues, like prostate cancer, lag significantly behind causes such as breast cancer.

The reasons for the poor state of men’s health in the UK and around the world are numerous and complex and this is primarily due to a lack of awareness of the health issues men face. This can largely be attributed to the reluctance in men to openly discussing the subject due to longstanding traditions, coupled with an ‘it’ll be alright’ attitude. Men are less likely to schedule doctors’ appointments when they feel ill or for an annual check-up, thereby denying them the chance of early detection and effective treatment of common diseases.

I first met Bruna when shooting her with the gorgeous Lola Coca for an online editorial (out soon), and she was nice enough to drop by the studio to do some more candid images, as she really liked the the way we worked together and the images from the editorial.

Bruna comes from Brazil, and was fresh back in the UK from a holiday in Ibiza where she'd topped up a gorgeous golden tan. Minimal styling, with candid and fun emotions was the theme for the day, and here's a selection of images from the shoot:

Just thought I'd post a blog about a new monthly feature I've got going on over at fashionbeans.com. The feature is a monthly look book/editorial bringing you the latest lines, trends and styling tips in the form of a completely original photoshoot. I'll be working alongside my friend and stylist Ashley Cover for these shoots, and hopefully bringing you some new and exciting male models from around the globe.

Binkertson won the June 2011 set of the month prize on Zivity

Team Binkertson are proud to say they've won a prize on a mainly US based website. We take photos for a website called Zivity, where you upload photos and earn money through people voting on your photo sets. We use it as a creative outlet to put up sets of images and to experiment/try out new ideas.

We entered one of their in house prizes and came 1st, winning $700. Apparently Binky and I are the 1st UK model/photographer to win any of the competitions, so it felt nice that the UK members are slowly being noticed on a mainly US based website.

I'd like to thank Binky for a) getting me to sign up and b) styling, planning and making the winning set happen. <3

I really like Issy, she's one super tall lady with one infectious personality. I always know when she drops by to shoot that something fun and creative will happy, not to mention she's the only 6ft + lady to ever get off of a train and give me an orchid lol (Thanks for the belated birthday present btw Issy, it's still alive and well).

Issy is a 6ft 1 Ugandan model with a penchant for the weird and wild when it comes to her hair. She rocked up to this shoot with an almost shaved head, full of red white and blue hair. We decided to work on putting emotions into photos and shooting some really candid and relaxed stuff, until I noticed a very swooshy dress Issy had, so we had to finish with some fun and movement games with that.

The Wedding of Sarah and Simon

The wedding of Sarah and Simon was a very very short notice booking, and was taken through the referral of a make-up artist Lyndsey Harrison. From the initial contact we'd had with the bride and groom it had the promise of being a very relaxed, fun and special day; and we were not disappointed.

This was the first wedding booking that The Creative Wedding Duo *(see more after the photos) had taken, so it was the kick-start of our new business, sending us on a new journey, just like that about to be taken by the bride and groom.

The wedding was located at Cliveden House in Berkshire and all we knew was that it was a fun couple, having a very small intimate wedding with 6 guests. Upon arrival at the rather HUGE and stunning location, Binky and I thought we were in for an exciting day. We were helped out of our car which was valet parked, whilst we were assisted into the house by an entourage of staff, who informed the bride and groom we were there before showing us to the rooms.

I won't go into too much detail about the day, but their small group of friends were so so lovely, and helped them have the most fun and enjoyable day. From mankini's, to all of the guests objecting to the wedding, and numerous 'in jokes' the banter kept the bride and groom laughing long into the evening.

It was great to finally get to work alongside Binky too and get the creative wedding duo under way, I'm so happy that our two differing eyes manage to capture images that fittingly come together to the story of the day.

Katy Cee was my first shoot of 2011, all the way back on January 3rd, and our shoots are just coming out in publications now. This shoot was a bit of a mess around the night before our editorial the following day, there's no styling, no make-up (the badgers or squirrels or something stole her make-up bag), there's not any editing, just straight out of camera candid voyeurism.

New Publication: Tatler July 2011 Issue - "Cool Britannia"

Over the Royal wedding weekend, I was sent down to Aynhoe Park by Devotion PR, to cover two events, the first being a Royal Garden Party to celebrate and watch the wedding; the second being a patriotic royal rave up on the following evening. I had my trusty assistant Andy Doane on hand, as covering this event was the kickstart of finally launching 2DamnCreative.

The garden party was great and it was exciting watching the royal wedding and capturing all the fun and games going on around the grounds of Aynhoe park during the ceremony. There really was a truly eclectic mix of people and emotions floating around the gardens. You can see my photos from the day here.

The following night I was working for Conde Nast/Tatler Magazine covering the royal rave, which was a rather splendid affair with an endless guest-list of gorgeous revellers; which included Matthew Williamson and Georgina Goodman.

A big thanks to Andy Doane, Romaine Flint Wood and James Perkins for making it a great weekend of events.

I get models of all sorts booking me for shoots, for all sorts of reasons; they may be after some new additions to a portfolio because of a look change or through having out dated photos, or because they want to get some photos done in a specific way and have chosen me to be the photographer to take them.

Cassie is a relatively new model, but is full of enthusiasm and willingness to learn. She booked me for a quick teaser shoot to give her a few new photos for her book. It's so refreshing to work with such a happy and inquisitive new model, trying to find out all she can about the industry and working with the people she wants. She's switched on and knows what she wants to do.

New iPhone and Bamboo Case

My old iPhone had a crack in the screen for so long (after having it replaced already) so I decided to just get the iPhone4. Being self employed, having something like the iPhone/iPad is an essential piece of kit for 'on the road' work. You can email, social network, take photos and of course make calls.

I decided to get a couple of cases for my new phone, a bamboo case that looks like a camera, and a leather case with screen protector. I got the Bamboo case from the ever popular site ETSY, from SigniCASE.

So I've recently been working on launching a new business and I'm currently in the process of assisting and shooting as many weddings as possible. I was lucky enough to bump into Christian Sinkinson at Focus on Imaging and he offered me some rather cool paid assistant jobs.

My first with Christian was on Saturday 7th of May and was the wedding of Catherine and William, a beautiful young couple from Norfolk. The sun was shining and it was a glorious wedding, with around 120 guests.
